Prevalent computer use in our personal and professional lives means we leave digital footprints (aka “metadata”) that are often key in litigation. With our digital forensics, we collect a user’s metadata evidence related to documents, photos, videos, and more from a user’s computer or tablet.
- Remote eDiscovery Services – You keep your device while we collect the evidence!
- We extract your evidence including deleted data, and more from cell phones, tablets, and computers.

What is Computer Metadata Evidence
Computer metadata is essentially data about data; it describes and provides additional key facts about a document, video, photograph, email, etc, that otherwise wouldn’t be seen with the naked eye. We collect metadata evidence for you to support your case. With this evidence, you might reveal activities, behaviors, and interests. Commonly used computer metadata evidence includes:
- Files: Creation date, deletion date, author, edit history.
- Software Applications: Install and uninstall dates, use frequency, and usage time.
- Browsing Metadata: Web search history, website title and URL, browser used, and time on websites.
Using Digital Forensics to Secure Metadata Evidence
No matter the condition of your computer or phone, frequently, our forensics experts can recover computer metadata evidence for your case – including previously deleted or otherwise hidden data. For example, our forensics investigators will look for evidence of tampering, like when someone tried to alter or destroy evidence.
We handle the data extraction remotely with our Remote Collection Unit. This means we will ship you our BlackBox and conduct the forensics examination remotely. Then, you return the BlackBox to us using our pre-paid shipping label and box. Once complete, we provide you with an Evidence Report for easy legal review.
We serve most computer models.
- Mac
- Windows
- Routers
- And more!
Using Litigation Discovery Protocols to Reduce and Review Metadata Evidence
Increasingly, we create and store greater amounts of digital data. It is daunting and expensive to collect and review it all in a lawsuit. When you consider adding metadata evidence to that review, you might shudder. However, we use litigation Discovery Protocols to define the scope of review and reduce the amount of evidence you review. For example, with a Discovery Protocol, we will:
- Define a begin date and end date filter;
- List the phones, email accounts, computers, and social media accounts for collection;
- List of data types you need (E.G., text messages, emails, photos, voicemails, and computer files);
- Limit text messages and emails to or from certain people;
- Limit the information by search terms and phrases;
- Cull privileged communications;
- Layout a Discovery Schedule; and
- Specify the method of production.
How Digital Evidence Helps Your Case
Our computer forensics investigator will assist you with strategies for how to use the metadata and other evidence effectively for your type of case, for example:
Criminal Law for defense or prosecution to prove where someone was at a particular place in time.
Family Law cases to improve your settlement by identifying hidden assets and accounts, or where there are allegations of abuse and custody concerns.
Employment Law to defend or prove wrongful termination, sexual harassment, or racial discrimination.
Business Litigation for contract disputes, business valuation concerns, and more.
Intellectual Property cases with copyright disputes – who wrote the content first? Where was it copied from? Which one is original?
Probate Administration where there is a will contest or need to identify assets for probate.
